Lome is situated on the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the most important commercial centers in the surrounding area. The city of Banjul is on the sandbar island called St. Mary's Iceland and is the capital of Gambia. At the time of British colonial rule, a fort and the Emplacement Six-Gun Battery was built to contain the slave trade. Six-Gun Battery 203 was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The triumphal arch above the city is the landmark.
