The Indian port city of Mumbai, known as Bombay until 1996, is located on the island of Salsette, off the west coast of Maharashtra. The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway in Egypt, which connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and crosses the dunes and deserts of the region. The construction of the canal shortens the journey from the North Atlantic to the northern Indian Ocean and vice versa by around 7,000 kilometers. No closure system is required to pass through the canal, because the seawater from both sources is at about the same height.
