The Pacific town of Callao is located in the Lima metropolitan region just ten miles west of the Peruvian capital. Callao services the country by both air and sea as the city acts as the nation's main seaport and airport. Due to the city's naval history, Callao was a major Spanish town in colonial times. Several islands line the coast of mainland Callao, such as the Palomino Island, a pristine habitat for sea lions and seabirds.
