Luleå is a city in the northern Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten. The town was established in 1887 after the original town was almost completely burnt down and the current town was built in its place. Luleå is the location of Gammelstad, the old town centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
